The private sphere of one’s life, which includes marriage, divorce, maintenance, succession etc. is governed by personal laws. These personal laws are particularly influenced by the religious customs prevalent in different communities. The private sphere of Muslims is governed by the Muslim Personal Law or Muslim Law. Muslim law is that branch of civil law which regulates the family-matters of Muslims. The Muslims in India are primarily governed by the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937. However, over a period of time, a number of legislations were enacted and a number of judicial pronouncements were made, to deal with different aspects of the private sphere of Indian Muslims.
The Foundation course on Muslim Law aims to provide an overview of different aspects of Muslim Personal Law in India vis-à-vis marriage, dissolution of marriage, adoption, maintenance, guardianship and succession, by means of video lectures.
